HAIL

Hail is a powerful external force that can cause significant damage to roofing systems. It can damage the shingles by causing granule loss on the surface and may sometimes cause bruising, or spots that are soft to the touch. In extreme cases it can even crack the shingle entirely, allowing water to penetrate the roof, eventually working its way into the interior of the property. Soft metals, such as roof vents, fascia, window casings etc., are especially susceptible to hail damage and are very easy to spot compared to damage on shingles, which generally require a trained eye to spot. This type of damage is covered by most insurance policies. It is important to have your roof inspected by a trained professional to asses potential damages.

This photo shows obvious signs of wind damage in the form of shingle lifting, mat transferring, and torn / missing shingles.

WIND

Excessive winds can easily cause damage to shingles, as well as other components of your home. While missing and torn off shingles are more obvious to spot, some damages are more subtle and can be easily looked over by an untrained eye. Excessive wind can cause lifting of the shingles, breaking the adhesive seal that allows your roof to properly shed water - especially wind driven rain. sometimes even creasing, or folding on the surface. Additional signs of wind damage on shingles are creasing and cracks as the wind lifts the single up, folding it onto the shingle tabs above it. Siding, fascia, and soffits are also susceptible to wind damage and are often found where excessive winds have caused damage to roofs.

These photos show aluminum siding and fascia that was torn by wind from the surface of the home causing scratching on the surface and breaking a glass window pane in the process. Also shown is a large tree branch that fell and caused damage to the garage roof, gutter, and fascia.

DEBRIS

Not only can excessive wind cause lifting and damage to any number of components of your home, it can also send removed materials and debris airborne, causing secondary damages. While tree branches might be the first thing that comes to mind, sometimes fascia, soffit, or even gutters can come crashing down, swiping everything in their path. These softer metals can easily bend and shear, making them extra hazardous to their surroundings, especially while excessive wind has them in its grip. These damages are considered sudden and accidental and are covered by most insurance polices.

Natural wear & aging

Sometimes it’s just time for a new roof. Regional climates, directional sunlight, nearby foliage growth, organic decay, quality of shingles and components: these are all contributing factors to the expectancy of your roof life. If you notice curling or chipped edges, granule loss, brittle / loose tiles, or dark spots it might be time to look into replacement. While these signs of deterioration might not be an immediate emergency, its is highly recommended to monitor them closely and plan for replacement ahead of time in order to mitigate unnecessary additional cost(s) and related damages. This type of damage is not covered by insurance policies and are of considerable cost.
