They don't call it the 'The Windy City' for nothing. On March 7th 2017 a 'High Wind Warning & Advisory' was in effect for most of Chicagoland and the surrounding suburbs.
Wind gusts clocking more than 60 mph shattered a window 38 stories high causing debris to reign down to a car below it in Chicago, near the intersection of Randolph & Dearborn. In Des Plains, the wind uprooted an entire tree, knocking out power lines and crushing a nearby wooden fence. In Skokie, an entire brick facade collapsed from a building exterior due to the fierce winds.
Several homes in Addison, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, and Lombard had pieces of siding and fascia ripped from their exteriors.
Both Chicago and its surrounding suburbs are prone to very drastic and violent changes in the weather, especially as the seasons change. Wind alone has the potential to cause tremendous property damage. Stronger gusts can tear shingles off of roofs, and rip siding off of homes. Broken branches can be sent airborne and sometimes entire trees are uprooted, destroying cars and even damaging homes - causing both injury and death.
While some wind damage can be spotted by the untrained eye, some types can not. Significant damages can easily go unnoticed until the problem finds it's way to the interior of your home. If you suspect wind damage has occurred to your home, it is best to contact a local licensed contractor to inspect the damages. If damaged roofing tiles or siding is left unaddressed, it can lead to water damage, mold, rot and usually all of the above. Most homeowners insurance policies will not cover damages like this, citing negligence on behalf of the homeowner. This means that you, the homeowner, is left with the burden and expense of the repair.
